10 Warnings You May Be Dealing With a Person Who Has Evil Intentions — A Christian Perspective
Not everyone who hurts us is an evil person. People make mistakes, lose their tempers, become jealous and sometimes make poor choices. But the Bible also warns Christians to use wisdom and discernment when dealing with people whose actions consistently cause harm.
Jesus taught His followers to recognize people by the fruit their lives produce. Matthew 7:16 reminds us that we can recognize people “by their fruit.” In other words, actions often reveal what words try to hide.
Here are 10 warning signs that someone may have harmful or destructive intentions.
1. They Constantly Lie and Deceive
A person who repeatedly lies, hides important information or changes their story may be difficult to trust. Proverbs 12:22 reminds us that lying lips are an offense to the Lord.
2. They Manipulate Others
Manipulation can take many forms. Someone may use guilt, fear, threats or emotional pressure to get what they want. Christians should remember that love does not require surrendering healthy boundaries.
3. They Enjoy Seeing Others Suffer
One concerning characteristic is taking pleasure in another person’s pain, failure or hardship. Scripture calls believers toward compassion rather than celebrating someone else’s suffering.
4. They Refuse to Accept Responsibility
Everyone makes mistakes. A warning sign is someone who never admits wrongdoing and always blames someone else. Genuine repentance requires acknowledging when we have done something wrong.
5. They Constantly Create Division
Some people seem to thrive on arguments, gossip and conflict. Proverbs repeatedly warns about the destructive power of someone who spreads strife. Christians should be careful not to become participants in unnecessary conflict.
6. They Are Driven by Jealousy and Envy
Envy can turn into resentment when someone cannot be happy for another person’s success. James 3:16 warns that where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, disorder can follow.
7. They Treat Vulnerable People Cruelly
How someone treats people who cannot benefit them can reveal a great deal about their character. Scripture repeatedly calls believers to care for widows, children, the poor and those who are vulnerable.
8. They Hold Onto Hatred
Anger can happen to anyone, but a continuing desire to hurt, destroy or seek revenge is something Christians should take seriously. Romans 12:19 reminds believers not to take revenge into their own hands.
9. They Use Religion to Control People
Not everyone who talks about God is acting according to God’s Word. A person can misuse religion to frighten, manipulate or control others. Christians should compare what they hear with Scripture rather than blindly following anyone who claims spiritual authority.
10. There Is a Repeated Pattern of Harm
One bad decision does not necessarily define someone’s character. However, a repeated pattern of lying, cruelty, manipulation, hatred and refusal to repent should not be ignored.
Christians Are Called to Love — and Use Discernment
Recognizing destructive behavior does not mean Christians should hate the person. Jesus commanded His followers to love their enemies and pray for those who mistreat them.
At the same time, forgiveness does not mean allowing someone to continue harming you. Christians can forgive while maintaining appropriate boundaries and seeking help when necessary.
The Bible encourages believers to be both loving and wise. Proverbs 22:3 teaches that a prudent person sees danger and takes precautions.
If someone consistently brings deception, cruelty, manipulation and destruction into your life, don’t ignore the warning signs simply because you want to be loving.
Pray for wisdom. Seek God’s guidance. Compare people’s actions with Scripture. And remember that sometimes the most loving response is to establish a healthy boundary while continuing to pray for that person’s heart to change.
