Georgia Daycare Worker Accused of Forcing Young Siblings to Fight, Raising Serious Questions About Protecting Children

EVANS, Ga. — A disturbing incident at a Georgia daycare has raised serious questions about the responsibility adults have to protect children entrusted to their care.

According to authorities and reports from local media, former Discovery Zone Kids employee Riffat Tahmin Khalil, 37, was arrested after authorities alleged that she forced two young siblings, a 9-year-old boy and his 6-year-old sister, to fight one another.

The incident reportedly occurred at the daycare in Evans, Georgia. According to an incident report reviewed by news organizations, the children’s mother was contacted by the daycare following an incident involving the siblings. When the children were picked up, they reportedly told their mother that their teacher had made them fight.

Authorities were subsequently contacted, and the daycare’s owner provided investigators with surveillance footage.

According to the sheriff’s office report, the footage allegedly showed Khalil prompting the children to fight. Investigators also alleged that after the fight, Khalil grabbed one of the children, swung the child into a chair and shook the child several times.

Authorities further alleged that Khalil encouraged one sibling to throw a chair at the other child. The incident reportedly ended when another teacher entered the room and removed one of the children.

Khalil was arrested and charged with three counts of cruelty to children. Her bond was initially set at $75,300.

For Christians, the case is particularly troubling because Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the importance of protecting and caring for children and other vulnerable people.

Jesus spoke strongly about the way children should be treated. In Matthew 18:5, He said, “And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.”

That teaching carries an important responsibility for parents, teachers, caregivers and anyone entrusted with the welfare of children. A child placed in the care of an adult should be met with patience, protection and compassion—not intimidation or violence.

The Bible also teaches that those entrusted with responsibility are accountable for how they use that responsibility. When an adult abuses a position of authority over children, the consequences can reach far beyond the immediate incident. Children can carry fear and emotional wounds from experiences that adults may never fully understand.

At the same time, Christians are called to seek justice while remembering that every person involved remains accountable before God and the law. Allegations should be distinguished from proven facts, and legal proceedings should be allowed to determine guilt.

The incident also serves as a reminder to parents to ask questions about the environments where their children spend time, understand daycare safety procedures and speak with children when something appears unusual or troubling.

Children deserve adults who will protect them, listen to them and treat them with dignity.

For Christian communities, that responsibility extends beyond the walls of a church or monastery. Protecting children is not simply a legal obligation—it is a moral responsibility and an expression of love for our neighbors.

As Proverbs 31:8 teaches, believers are called to “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.”

In cases involving vulnerable children, that principle remains as important today as ever.
