why does the Lord allow our hearts to break?
Brothers and sisters, we gather today with hearts both hopeful and heavy. We gather with questions, with doubts, and perhaps even with a touch of anger. We gather because we’re grappling with a profound and often painful truth: the feeling that the Lord, whom we love and trust, is somehow breaking our hearts. We ask, in the quiet moments of our prayer, in the midst of our tears, “Lord, why? Why this pain? Why this loss? Why this heartache that feels like it will never end?” And in our searching, we may find ourselves wrestling with a fundamental misunderstanding of the Lord’s nature. We may mistakenly believe that faith guarantees a life free from hardship, a life shielded from sorrow. But the scripture, my friends, teaches us otherwise. Jesus himself, the embodiment of God’s love, knew suffering. He knew betrayal. He knew the crushing weight of injustice. He wept. He bled. And he ultimately surrendered his life, not because he was weak, but because he knew that even in the darkest valley, God’s love prevails. So, why does the Lord allow our hearts to break? Perhaps it’s not about *breaking* us, but about *breaking us open*. Breaking open our hearts to a deeper empathy for others who suffer. Breaking open our hearts to a more profound understanding of our own vulnerability and dependence on God. Breaking open our hearts to the possibility of a love that transcends earthly limitations. Think of the seed buried in the earth. The hard shell must crack, must break, before the new life within can sprout. The pain of the breaking allows for growth, for expansion, for a stronger, more resilient plant to emerge. Similarly, our broken hearts can become fertile ground for spiritual growth. In our pain, we often turn to God in ways we never would have otherwise. We seek His comfort, His guidance, His strength. And in that seeking, we discover a deeper connection to Him, a more intimate relationship born from the ashes of our despair. Brothers and sisters, I’m not suggesting that pain is easy, or that grief is a blessing in disguise. I am saying that even in the midst of heartbreak, God’s love is present. He is not distant, judging us from afar. He is with us, weeping alongside us, holding us in his unwavering embrace. The Lord does not break our hearts out of malice, but out of a profound and unwavering love that seeks to transform us, to refine us, to lead us closer to Him. He allows us to experience the depths of sorrow so that we can appreciate the heights of joy. He allows us to feel the sting of loss so that we can cherish the preciousness of life. So, when you feel your heart breaking, don’t turn away from the Lord. Lean into Him. Cry out to Him. Share your pain, your doubts, your anger. He can handle it. He *wants* to handle it. And in the midst of your pain, remember this: You are not alone. The Lord is with you, and so are your brothers and sisters in Christ. Let us support each other, comfort each other, and pray for each other. Let us find strength in our shared faith and hope in the promise of a brighter tomorrow. For even in our brokenness, God’s love remains. And that love, my friends, is enough. Amen.
