Sermon: “How the Devil Attacks Us”

Introduction

Beloved in Christ, today we turn our hearts to a sobering yet vital truth: the reality of spiritual opposition. The Apostle Peter warns us, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8, NIV). How does this ancient foe seek to derail our faith and drag us into darkness? Let us explore three common tactics of the devil and discover how, in Christ, we stand undefeated.

1. The Attack of Deception

Scripture Passage

• 2 Corinthians 11:14: “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”

Explanation

The devil’s first weapon is deception. He distorts the truth, whispers half-lies, and paints sin in attractive colors. He may tell us that small compromises don’t matter, that “everyone does it,” or that God’s commands are outdated. In the Garden, he told Eve, “You will not surely die,” twisting God’s word (Genesis 3:4).

Application

• Test every spirit (1 John 4:1). Compare every thought and teaching against Scripture.
• Cling to God’s promises. When doubt creeps in, recall Christ’s words: “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

2. The Attack of Temptation

• James 1:14–15: “Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.”

Explanation

Temptation is tailor-made. The devil studies our weaknesses—pride, greed, lust, anger—and sets snares accordingly. Like Jesus in the wilderness, we face “stones into bread” or “kingdoms for a bow” (Matthew 4:1–11). He dangles immediate gratification and worldly success to lure us away from God’s higher call.

Application

• Flee. Joseph ran from Potiphar’s wife (Genesis 39:12). When temptation strikes, put distance between you and the snare.
• Pray. Jesus taught us, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” (Matthew 6:13). Honest, persistent prayer breaks the devil’s momentum.
• Equip yourself with the Word. Jesus replied to each devilish offer with Scripture. Let Psalm 119:11 guard your heart: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

3. The Attack of Accusation

• Revelation 12:10: “The accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night.”

Explanation

Once temptation fails, the devil shifts to condemnation. He reminds us of every past failure—every slip, every selfish word. He whispers, “God will never forgive you,” or “You’re not good enough.” But Scripture tells us that Christ has “boasted” in our behalf before the Father: “Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died…” (Romans 8:34).

Application

• Remember your identity in Christ. You are forgiven, cleansed, and adopted into God’s family (1 John 3:1).
• Refuse the lies. When the accuser speaks, respond with Christ’s intercession: “My Advocate is standing at the Father’s side” (1 John 2:1).

The Armor of God

Ephesians 6 urges us, “Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11). Let us clothe ourselves with:

1. The Belt of Truth
2. The Breastplate of Righteousness
3. The Gospel of Peace
4. The Shield of Faith
5. The Helmet of Salvation
6. The Sword of the Spirit (God’s Word)

Through prayer and the Holy Spirit’s power, we wield these defenses daily.

Conclusion & Call to Action

Dear friends, the devil is real, relentless, and deceptive—but he is already defeated at the cross (Colossians 2:15). As we face deception, temptation, and accusation, let us:

• Anchor ourselves in God’s unchanging Word.
• Pray without ceasing, asking for wisdom and strength.
• Support one another in community, confessing struggles and celebrating victories (James 5:16).

Be encouraged: Christ has overcome the world (John 16:33). As you go forth this week, resist the enemy steadfastly, knowing that your faith and perseverance are powerful in Him who loves you. Amen.
