Sermon: When You Surrender Your Life to Christ, Expect the Attack
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

1. Introduction: The New Battle Begins
Brothers and sisters, handing your life over to Jesus is the greatest decision you will ever make. In that moment of surrender, you are born again (John 3:3), clothed in Christ’s righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21), and sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). Yet immediately, a spiritual battle erupts. Satan—once defeated at Calvary—still prowls, intent on discouraging, deceiving, and destroying the saints.
Open‐tradition reminder: God’s plan is dynamic. He invites us into an ongoing relationship, co‐laboring with Him in prayer, obedience, and community. And because we live in the “now and not yet,” we must stay alert.
2. The Reality of Spiritual Warfare
Scripture never leaves us in doubt:
- 1 Peter 5:8–9 – “Be sober, be vigilant… resist him, steadfast in the faith.”
- Ephesians 6:12 – “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but… spiritual hosts of wickedness.”
- James 4:7 – “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
Satan is crafty, relentless, and empowered only by the limits God allows. He cannot know your future (Job 1:7) nor thwart God’s ultimate will (Romans 8:28). Yet he will hit you where it hurts most.
3. Satan’s Three Common Tactics
A. Doubt and Deception
Genesis 3:1 – “Has God indeed said…?”
Satan started his campaign in Eden by questioning God’s character. When you give your heart to Christ, expect whispers:
- “Are you really forgiven?”
- “Did God truly call you?”
- “You’ll never measure up.”
Counterattack: Immerse yourself in God’s Word (Psalm 119:105). Speak Scripture aloud. Remember Jesus’ rebuttal of Satan in the wilderness (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10).
B. Temptation and Trial
Matthew 4:1–11 – Jesus faced temptations immediately after His baptism.
Trials refine our faith:
- Financial pressures
- Relationship conflicts
- Addictive cravings
Counterattack: Lean on God’s strength (Philippians 4:13). Pray persistently (Luke 22:44). Seek accountability in the Body (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10).
C. Suffering and Discouragement
Job 1–2 – Job’s faith was tested through loss and pain.
When blessings flow, gratitude grows; when storms come, faith deepens. Satan loves to heap guilt and despair on believers:
- “God has abandoned you.”
- “Your pain is your punishment.”
Counterattack: Remember God’s faithfulness in your story. Share testimonies (Revelation 12:11). Let the community of faith carry your burdens (Galatians 6:2).
4. Armoring Up: God’s Strategy for Victory
Ephesians 6 gives us a divine defense plan:
- Belt of Truth (v.14) – Know what you believe.
- Breastplate of Righteousness (v.14) – Live as a child of God.
- Gospel Shoes (v.15) – Be ready to proclaim peace.
- Shield of Faith (v.16) – Quench every fiery dart of doubt.
- Helmet of Salvation (v.17) – Guard your mind with assurance.
- Sword of the Spirit (v.17) – The living Word, active in battle.
- Prayer (v.18) – Persistent, Spirit‐led communion with the Father.
Open‐tradition emphasis: Prayer is not a monologue but a two‐way conversation. We pray, listen, obey, and watch God respond.
5. Conclusion: From Victims to Overcomers
Dear friends, when you handed your life to Christ, you signed up for an epic saga. Yet Jesus promised, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Your victory is assured in Him:
- Resist (James 4:7)
- Stand firm (Ephesians 6:13)
- Rejoice (1 Peter 5:8–9)
Let every attack propel you back into God’s presence, deepen your trust, and sharpen your testimony. As the Apostle Paul declares:
“We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us!”
